Letter to Camille Burchfield from Paul B. Free. Postmarked November 15, 1939. "Nov. 14, 1939 3:15 P. M. Bellow’s Field Hi Whahini, Well, I’m not home anymore. We are at Bellow’s Field near Waimanalo, on the opposite side of the island from Wheeler Field, where we are having target practice for the pilots. This is certainly a great place for mosquitoes. They pick their teeth with prop blades. No fooling last night I heard two talking. The one said, “Should we eat him here or drag him down on the beach”. “No let’s eat him here,” said the other one, “if we drag him to the beach the big ones might take him away from us.” Thanks a million for Max’s address. The only bugs that destroy pineapples that I know of are soldiers but I’ll find out if there are others. This is certainly a grand place. Coconut trees, banana (wow! Is that right?) trees and white sand. I sleep about 100 yds from the ocean and the surf sure sounds nice in the evening. There really isn’t much to write about as life is rather settled into the rut, usually called routine. Well, kuuipo, I’ll write soon (honestly) the next time. Aloha Paul P. S. Father didn’t like the sermon, Mother thought the organist played off key and Sister didn’t like the selections of the choir, but it stopped them all when Sonny said, “I think it was a darn good show for a nickle.” Bye" |
