Letter to Camille Burchfield from Paul B. Free. Postmarked September 15, 1939. Letter Reads: "Sept. 13, 1939 Thurs. 2:30 P. M. Dear Camille, My dear Miss Burchfield, you are now reading a letter from one of the members of the 26th Attack Squadron. Whew!! What a day! I’ve finally finished my moving. I received you letter this morning, and really it was quite an event. It was your first letter to arrive in Hawaii. I just this minute got a letter from my next best girl. She is the little girl who lives next door to my folks. She’s really worried about me. In fact, she even prays for me every night. I’m sorry to hear that your grandmother is ill. I hope she has speedy recovery. Yesterday I met a boy from Montgomery. He is in the 75th Service Squadron. His name is Kaiher (I think that’s it) or Kailer. He said he knows you. I’m sorry I can’t send what I had planned in this letter, but in at least two weeks I’ll mail them. How are you and Mrs. Bates getting along? Give her my address so she can drop a line if she likes. I think I’m about as lucky as they come. Confidentially – the 26th is the best squadron in Hawaii. It is rumored that the whole squadron will be moved to Hickam Field around the first of the year. I certainly hope so. This place is swell but it’s too far out in the wilderness to suit me. Hickam is just outside of Honolulu. Tomorrow we get 274 more recruits in here. You see they’re doubling the personel of the whole outfit. There is some thing I’d like to tell you , that is, if you can keep a secret. Just between you and me – I think you are about the sweetest girl in the world. That may sound sort of funny, but it’s the truth. You’ll never know just how anxiously I wait for your letters and for the end of my enlistment, when I can come home and see you. It will be for only three months, but it will be in the fall when things are pretty. I’ll probably be back in Sept. of 1941. You’ll be in college won’t you? Or won’t you? Well it’s nigh on to dinner time, so I’d better get dressed. Bye x x x x x x x x x x x x Lots of Love Paul Address – Pvt. P. B. Free 26th Attack Squadron Wheeler field Honolulu, T. H." |
